Clair Obsur: A Surrealist’s Dream

I avoided Clair Obsur 33 for a while; due in large part to my contrarian nature. Whenever a game is lauded as “the best” for whatever reason I question it. Partially because the taste of the masses is sorely lacking. Also due to the fact that even if a game might be good and fun, that doesn’t mean that it’s MY kind of fun.

Thankfully though curiosity and deals on Loaded very easily trump my snobbery. Thanks to this, I had the pleasure of experiencing the smorgasbord of surrealism that is Clair Obscure 33.

As stated by the world over, the combat system[s], mechanics, gameplay, music are all great but what I have come to love is the art at the core of it all. Beyond having some of the best art direction I’ve been from RPGs in quite some time the game is ABOUT art. Conceptually and in a way that is made concrete via the worlds traversed, enemies faced and the source[s] of power that control it all.

I’m purposefully avoiding going TOO far in depth because the joy of understanding the world, and the powers that drive it are a large part of what makes it all so rewarding. As such I’ll simply be sharing my treasure trove of screenshots for you to bath in the beauty of the game’s art.

PLAY IT. You’ll definitely be able to catch it on sale soon.
